Can You Turn Your Ideas Into An Online Business?
Nov 29, 2016
I get asked so many times, “How do I take my skills, the things that I know, and turn them into an online business?”
I want to share with you four steps to take those skills and turn them into something that you’re making money with on the regular.
Step 1: Recognize the skills that people will actually pay for.
A lot of times we get the illusion that just because we’re good at something, people should pay us for it. I love sitting on my patio with my feet up and watching my kids play, but I haven’t found a way to get paid to do that yet.
You have to take the things that you are really good at, the things that you’re passionate about, the things that you’re better than everyone else on the planet, and make sure that people are actually paying for that.
Will someone take their hard-earned money and give it to you?
Once you have that answer, you can go into step number two.
Step 2: Do that service for someone.
Whether that’s a done-for-you service, or you’re freelancing, or you’re really just helping your friends, your family members, you need to go out and do the thing that you want people to pay for.
This validates if people actually want your help or your service. You start going to your friends, and you’re asking them, “Hey, can I help you out with this?” They say, “No, I don’t need help with that.” Well, then you know that they probably wouldn’t pay for that. Or they are the wrong target market.
Going out and just doing it for people gets you that validation. It also gets you results because you go, and you help that person, and you get them a result. Now you have a case study. Now you have a testimonial. Now you have proof that you can go out and actually do those things.
Step 3: Turn your skill into a system.
You have to take that skill or idea or service and turn it into four steps, into five steps so it is repeatable and memorable. Think about Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, or the 4-Hour Work Week from Tim Ferriss.
The online marketing and funnel expert Todd Brown calls this a unique mechanism. In the info product world, we call this a framework. You have to take your skill and put it into a neat little package that people go, “Oh, I need that, and you’re the only person in the world who delivers it in a system like that.”
Once you have your system, you can go into the fourth and final step
Step 4: Turn your system into an online course.
This is your flagship program that you sell online to legions of people, and you start making that money while you’re sleeping, while you’re vacationing, or while you’re building new marketing systems to get this system into people’s steps. It is the cornerstone of any successful online business. It is the ultimate way to scale your time and give you more freedom in the process. But you can only get there if you go through steps 1–3 before getting to step 4.
Again, that four-step process: First, are people going to pay for the skill that you have? Number two, go out and do that skill. Go out and consult, go out and coach, go out and freelance, go out and create a done-for-you service. Thing number three, turn that skill into a framework, into a system, and into a process. Finally, step four, turn that process into an online course. That is how you get paid to do the things that you love.
